"The child shall enjoy special protection, and shall be given opportunities and facilities ... to enable him to develop physically, mentally, morally, spiritually and socially in a healthy and normal manner and in conditions of freedom and dignity."

Katja House was established to give the street children of Kathmandu the basic priviledges that we believe children should enjoy around the world. In particular, an idea that "every child should have the right an education."

Katja House stands on a wonderful site nestling in the foothills of the Valley of Bhadgaon, just 5km outside the ring road surrounding Kathmandu, not far from the airport. The decision to locate outside Kathmandu was a deliberate one, pollution being an ever-increasing hazard.

The plight of Kathmandu's street children eventually came to the attention of a group of Hong Kong school teachers and their pupils on their annual treks to Nepal. Over a number of years, what began as spontaneous demonstrations of support for a lucky few, turned into a humanitarian project, an endeavour by a fortunate group on behalf of their Third World peers.

The project grew and horizons expanded.

A plea for support struck a chord with a Hong Kong businessman and the funds were raised to buy some land and build a 'home', a quality refuge and sanctuary for 50 children.
